We’re well into fall, a season that brings us hot apple cider, woolly blankets, and thick socks. But perhaps most importantly, it’s that time of year that brings us together with our family and friends. Scott and I get the most loved ones visiting Chicago during these last months of the year. Because our house was a construction zone last year, we wanted to make things right this year. In our guest room we started with a somewhat beige, somewhat yellow, oddly shaped box, and although it was all bare bones and mildly unwelcoming, it was a blank slate we were excited to tackle.
We wanted the space to feel relaxing and inviting, but at the same time, we were eager to put our quirky stamp on it, too! Starting with a soothing green base for the walls, we moved on to a black and gold feature wall and followed that up with a dramatic headboard. So when it came time to cover our windows, we wanted to keep things clean and crisp, so as not compete with the punchy choices we’d made.
The guest room window looks out onto our neighbor’s front yard, but it also supplies the only natural light for the room. With that in mind, our choice was rather simple! We loved the Roman shade in our reading nook, so we opted for the same style of fabric. But this time, we nixed the gray and opted for Fenton White. Everything down to the inside mount, flat style, and bottom up/top down capability was mimicked from the nook, which allows our guests to tweak the amount of privacy and light control they’re looking for in the room.
We’ve come to love the ease of installation that comes along with our Bali Blinds; it couldn’t be more simple!
Most windows are cased with solid wood, so there’s no need for anchors. After screwing our brackets into the window’s header, the blind snaps right into place. For both our reading nook and the guest room, installation has taken no more than 15 minutes!
As we were making design decisions around the guest room, we quite literally asked for input from those who would use it the most—our friends. We asked past visitors what they were looking for in terms of privacy and window shades, and the overall request was something light filtering (check!), as it would allow them to wake up invigorated. Because Chicago is such an amazing city with a never ending list of must-dos, no one wants to sleep the day away! We love that the Fenton White fabric has a slight slub texture and a good weight, while still providing the right amount of light filtering. Rather than being blinded by the sun in the morning, our guests will wake up to a soft, warm glow. Sounds romantic, doesn’t it?
To say that we love the way the room turned out wouldn’t be saying enough! The clean white shades complement the bolder components of the room, and plays nicely with our fabric pendant and duvet. Of course, the room wouldn’t be complete without our pets’ approval, so we allowed CC and Jack to give it a test run.
As it turns out, the room is a success! (Well, that is, among the fuzzy family members.) Our first visitors arrive late November, and we’re looking forward to having them break it in!
