How Does a Room Make You Feel?

It’s no secret that around here we’re big fans of blinds, shades, and draperies (sometimes together!) to spice up a naked window. Recently, I shared with you the window fabrics of our home, ranging from casual Roman shades to long and flowing curtains. Friends have asked, “How do you decide which treatment to put into which room? To which I can easily dive into a story about the feel of each room, the colors I have in mind for the space, or which way the sun sets and rises through our windows. Are there a lot of factors to keep in mind when choosing the best window treatment? Sure! But it doesn’t have to be difficult. There is actually one thing I do every single time we add blinds, shades, or draperies to our windows—I order swatches!

When I’m torn with design indecision, I’ll order several swatches. Bali Blinds offers up to ten free swatches, so I happily take full advantage. I may order five different blues and throw in five wild cards. From patterns to sheers, I want to make sure I’m getting a wide range of possibilities to mull over. With my swatches in hand, again, this is when I do a gut check and ask myself how I want the room to feel. Here’s how that might look:

If I’m feeling bold, I’ll lean towards rich hues and thicker fabrics. When I think of dramatic rooms, I think of floor to ceiling drapes, a vibrant color palette and statement accessories! A combination of an unexpected paint color and layering of blinds and curtains can be a big statement.

If I’m feeling cool and minimal, I’ll consider no more than two to three colors in the room. However, this doesn’t have to be boring! High contrast shades (like those in our dining room) can make for an intentional, thoughtful statement, as long as the rest of the room is pulled back.

If I’m feeling relaxed, I’ll think of wooden blinds or bamboo shades. In our previous home, we had wall-to-wall, walnut-toned blinds, and our living room felt dramatically warmer. I love the casual feel these natural elements lend to any room!

If I’m feeling playful, I’ll consider bold patterns and a splash of bright color! I’ve yet to make this leap in our current home, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve received swatches with embroidered and floral patterns. Just when I think I might finally go for it, I fall back to my safer choices of white, black, and navy. If you’re more brave than I am, please share your rooms in the comments!

We’re all multi-faceted people, so I encourage you to start gathering those swatches and consider layering a few different styles!
